Coaching Philosophy
|
Whether you are coaching a little league baseball team or a high school team, a
coaching philosophy is an important thing to develop and think about. The goal
of this section is to help raise awareness and remind coaches and parents of
the difficulties involved in youth athletics. The emotions of watching your
child play in a competitive youth baseball environment can sometimes bring out
the worst in all of us. How we deal with our role is something that each of us
needs to consider and think about. Developing a baseball coaching philosophy is
an essential part of coaching. It will help guide you throughout the season.

ball and how to throw the ball to second, you need to know the game of
baseball. This section will give you baseball tips on how to play this

Baseball Instruction - Hitting
|
Since you love playing baseball, your goal is to become a better hitter.
Everyone has an opinion, and everyone will give you advice. Your job is to take
all the advice and weed out everything that doesn't fit your hitting style. How
do you know what to weed out? There are certain fundamentals common to all good
hitters. Use those fundamentals as your building blocks, then be open to other
advice. Try out different ways of hitting, different stances, different
approaches, different drills. If something works for you, keep it; if it
doesn't, throw it out. Analyze your strengths and weaknesses, incorporate these
into how you practice, and how you approach each at bat. This section will give
you some baseball tips on how to become a better hitter. It also provides
information to coaches on how to teach hitting.

Baseball Instruction - Playing Infield
|
Infield play is important to the success of any defense. The ability to field
and throw accurately often is the difference in the game. Errors happen to
everyone, but a solid infield that makes few errors and can make some difficult
plays puts their team in a position to win. This section will give you some
baseball tips on how to become a better infielder. It also provides information
to coaches on how to teach the baseball fundamentals that will help the team
play better defense.

Baseball Instruction - Pitching
|
If you love to compete, then pitching may be for you. While you love to compete
you must also be the type of person that can easily put aside failure and
concentrate on the task at hand. It's rare for a pitcher to have many 1-2-3
innings. You're going to give up hits, walks, and deal with fielders making
errors. If you can't get over these plays and focus completely on the next
pitch, you're going to struggle. Pitching, just like hitting, will bring advice
from almost everyone, especially if you're struggling. Handling the "advice"
will often take as much mental toughness as pitching in a game. Most often
pitching problems are caused by poor pitching mechanics. This section provides
information on baseball pitching mechanics and how to teach pitching.

Baseball Instruction - Catching and Throwing
|
Good defense revolves around a teams ability to throw accurately and catch the
baseball. Watch any high school level team or below warm up in the outfield and
you'll see players using poor throwing mechanics and running after poorly
thrown balls. If playing catch is such a core skill for defense, why aren't
players better at it? One of the primary reasons is that many coaches don't
teach their players how to throw and catch. This section covers the baseball
fundamentals necessary for playing catch. Throwing and catching the baseball
along with how to teach those skills is covered.

Baseball Situations
|
As a coach you want your team prepared for every situation. If you can't throw
out a runner stealing bases, then the opposing team will steal all day long. If
your team can't field a bunt then you won't feel very comfortable in close
games. Good team defensive involves having a good strategy, practicing the
plays that are part of that strategy, and then calling those plays in the game.
If you're team is well prepared then you will feel confident calling plays
during the game, and you may actually look to take advantage of other team's
offensive weaknesses with your defensive strength. In this section will look at
different defensive plays that you can use with your team.

Coaching Tools
|
Coaching is a difficult job. For most of us it's not a job, it's a volunteer
activity that requires a lot of time and effort on our own time. This section
of the site is devoted to try and help you out by providing tools that can help
you get organized, share ideas, ask questions, and hopefully improve your
coaching experience while saving time. Tools provided in this section include
an online baseball stats application, sample parent letter, baseball pitching
and hitting charts, practice plan worksheets, and
a baseball discussion forum.
